Local Attractions

The New Forest was set aside by William the Conqueror more than nine centuries ago as a hunting forest.

Today, the New Forest is still home to many wild deer and perhaps more famously the wild New Forest ponies, donkeys and pigs which wander completely freely and have the right of way.  There are many sleepy, picturesque villages tucked away with traditional thatched cottages.  Sway is one of these.

The New Forest is a genuine walker's paradise with many circular routes within its 90,000 acres. There are many picnic and toilet facilities, all carefully sited to allow visitors safe and easy access to a variety of forest landscapes. The New Forest is also a fantastic place for cycling with miles of traffic free tracks leading you right into the heart of the forest with few hills to worry about.

Try exploring the forest at different times of year and at different times of day. The forest is most atmospheric at dusk – you also stand the best chance of seeing deer, bats and nightjars.  However, please drive carefully as animals tend to wander onto our roads at night.

Activities and things to see and do!

The New Forest offers our visitors plenty to see and do:

The National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Exbury Gardens with it’s world famous Azalea and Rhododendrons, Bucklers Hard – the historic village on the banks of the Beaulieu River where ships for Nelson’s fleet were built - and the picturesque town of Lymington with its sailing and Saturday market.

Marwell Zoo near Winchester has one thousand animals to see, who inhabit 100 acres of beautiful Hampshire Parkland, or alternatively you can visit the Otter, Owl and Wildlife Conservation Park to see the animals in their own habit.

For the children’s entertainment there is Paultons Park with lots of rides, live entertainment and plenty of fresh air and also the award winning Adventure Wonderland family park packed with lots of themed rides and entertainment.

The towns and villages of Lyndhurst, Burley, Brockenhurst, Ringwood and Christchurch are all worth a visit.

There are several first class golfing greens in the area.  Why not use Sway Manor Hotel as a base for a golfing break?  We can help you arrange this, please call us on 01590 682754 or email us your request.
